National Environmental Policy ActThe National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) is the foundation for environmental protection in the United States, and establishes protocol for federal agencies to follow in order to make environmental awareness a priority among public and private sectors. State and local governments or private sector organizations can fall under NEPA for proposed projects that receive federal funding, or require federal permits including dam licensing, wetlands fill permits, and wastewater discharge permits. NEPA requires a public study, disclosure, and development of feasible mitigation. The information is then presented in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for review.
